Is there a link between physio and Dr. Karl?
Everyone knows and loves the guy but before he was a Doctor, at one point he actually drove taxis for a living. Super weird. Despite often finding himself at all hours of the night in dead quiet streets, weary and tired with not a car in sight, Dr Karl would always utilise his blinker. Always. He proclaims that this engrained the behaviour in his brain so that he would employ it at all times regardless of the situation (for example if there was a distracting passenger in the car or an incoming phone call for another job).
Why on earth is this relevant to you? And to a Physio?
If you can practice good movement patterns with considered and structured mobility exercises in your own time, you are more likely to employ these very same patterns in everyday life, automatically. If you are taught correct squatting technique and practice and develop this skill, you will squat with excellent technique when you lift up your child, train in the gym or help a mate move his fridge.
The best bit? Moving well reduces your chance of injury and pain! If you are in pain or are injured there’s a good chance you should be working on your movement. Think of the Doctor Karl example – if he uses his blinker he’s less likely that someone will run up the back of him, therefore reducing his risk of injury. Move more and move better and you will be less likely to injure yourself and thus experience pain, so good!
